Manual Well Drilling Training Project

Community Ownership

The local community volunteers their own labor which creates a sense of ownership. This ensures the community will understand the equipment, maintain the well, and maintain their dignity. Relationships are created and the gospel of Jesus is shared.

Cost Effective

A commercially drilled well often costs as much as $10,000. A manually dug well with local volunteer labor can be completed for as little as $600. This is an economically sustainable price without the need for outside funding.

Replicable

Teams from local communities are trained and will be able to replicate the teaching in surrounding communities. This will sustain hope in the country long after the team continues work elsewhere.

The Vanuatu Field envisions a future where there is a strong indigenous church in each of Vanuatu’s 100+ languages. Collectively we are pursuing this vision by reaching the lost, planting churches, training believers and serving the poor. It is in Serving the Poor that Sustain Hope’s Water Well Project facilitates our vision.

Many of the unreached communities of Vanuatu are geographically remote and culturally resistant. They are not merely non-Christian, they are fiercely proud of it. In this context we are constantly seeking keys that will allow us entry into these communities.

Water, clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing is a universal human need. Brandon and Vicki Forester’s work with the Water Well Project allows us to meet people at this point of need, granting opportunities for interaction that in turn creates the opening for evangelism and future church planting.

Villages that have received access to clean water through Sustain Hope’s Water Well project receive follow up visits from evangelistic teams from Sanma Bible Training Center. Several have indicated an openness to receiving a church plant in the future.

The ministry pattern is engagement, evangelism, discipleship resulting in church planting. An elder in the village of Vas told me, “Missionary, this well created a new openness to the church in this entire area.” That is effective engagement.

Sustain Hope’s Water Well project is more than a one time good deed. It is a valuable outreach that leverages the church planting efforts of the Vanuatu Field. Placing a well in a community creates ongoing goodwill and opportunities for continued interaction with the receiving community. We look forward to more teams being trained to increase the scope of this ministry.
